Albuquerque Police Officer Shot by Fellow Officer in Shooting That Killed Suspect

Albuquerque, New Mexico — On October 13, 2024, around 11:30 p.m. Albuquerque Police Officers responded to to a domestic disturbance call in the 10800 block of Central, east of Eubank. The caller stated that their Stepmother’s boyfriend had hit the Stepmother and that they were inside of a bedroom still arguing and fighting. The 911 operator, at some point during the call heard gunshots and the caller started to advise that the stepmother ‘s boyfriend was now firing the gun in the air. When officers officers Jeff Schwarzel, Reanna Torres and Vanesa Zuniga arrived on scene, an armed man, identified as 41-year-old Matthew Sanchez, walked out onto the street toward officers.

Sanchez was non-compliant, and shots were fired. Sanchez was killed, and Officer Schwarzel was struck in the hand and arm. Officers Zuniga and Schwarzel fire at Sanchez first before Officer Torres, her head turned away, pulled the trigger. One of the bullets went through the bicep and arm of the officer in front of her. Officer Schwarzel immediately starts screaming in pain and Torres, attending to him, says she’s “worried” she shot him. Medics took Officer Schwarzel to UNM Hospital. They released him in the next early morning. Investigators say it was a case of friendly fire. Sanchez was a felon and not allowed to have a firearm. Authorities are still investigating this matter, and all three involved officers have not returned to work yet.
